Crush?!

What do you mean by a crush?

I asked this question when I heard the word “crush” for the first time.

Fifteen years ago, I remember when I went one time to pick up my two-year-old son from the childcare he used to attend; his caregiver approached me with a big smile on her face and said, “A girl has a crush on your son.”

I stared at her and said, “why did she crush him? Is he ok?” LOL

She gave me a confused look and said, “he’s absolutely fine. A girl has been playing and chatting with him all day. She likes him.”

“This is what I meant with a crush.” she added.

She explained this because she realized that I’m bilingual and obviously, I did not understand the meaning of the word crush.

What she did not know was that language was not the only barrier to not apprehending what she said; it was my culture too.

I grew up in a small community, which was a rural village.

Its culture was being sort of strict, especillay when it gets to expressing emotions.

It was kind of unfair to girls and women when it got to express their interest in the opposite sex.

Girls and women from my gen X and older generations were not allowed to speak out about how they felt toward someone they liked.

It was shameful and disgraceful to do so. In many cases, none wanted to ask them for marriage, because they spoke up.

Even though men were more privileged than women, they were able to show interest in the women they liked but secretly. Because this was going indeed hurt the reputation of the women they liked.

Thus, men used to end up always marrying their first crushes. What a bummer!

However, these days many

things in my culture have changed including the right to express own emotions.

Gen Z seems to be more a rebellion.

Currently, girls and boys in my culture have equal rights to express their emotions and show their interest in the opposite sex.

Unfortunately, this change has caused a deep conflict between gen Z and my generation.

While nowadays girls from my culture are more open, expressive, and able to crush on boys, women from generation are still wondering, what a crush is!! LOL

كراش! ماذا تقصد بكلمة “كراش”؟

سألتُ هذا السؤال عندما سمعتُ كلمة “كراش” لأول مرة.

قبل خمسة عشر عامًا، أتذكر عندما ذهبتُ ذات مرة لأخذ ابني ذي العامين من الحضانة التي كان يرتادها؛ اقتربت مني مربية الأطفال بابتسامة عريضة وقالت: “فتاة بتكراش على ابنك”.

حدّقتُ بها وقلتُ: “لماذا هي اكرشت عليه؟ هل هو بخير؟”

نظرت إليّ بنظرة مرتبكة وقالت: “إنه بخير تمامًا. فتاة تلعب معه وتتحدث معه طوال اليوم. إنها معجبة به”.

وأضافت: “هذا ما قصدته بكلمة “كراش”.

شرحت لي ذلك لأنها لاحظت أني أتحدث اللغة الإنجليزية بلكنة، وكان من الواضح أنني لم أفهم معنى كلمة “كراش”.

ما لم تعلمه المُربية هو أن اللغة لم تكن العائق الوحيد أمامي لفهم ما قالته، بل كانت ثقافتي سببًا أيضًا في ذلك.

لقد نشأتُ في قرية ريفية صغيرة، بإحدى محافظات مصر. كانت ثقافتها صارمة نوعًا ما، خاصةً فيما يتعلق بالتعبير عن المشاعر.

كان الأمر ظالمًا للفتيات والنساء عندما حرمن من حقهن في التعبير عن أنفسهن .

لم يكن يُسمح للفتيات من جيلي والأجيال الأكبر سنًا بالتعبير عن مشاعرهن تجاه الشخص الذي يُعجبن به.

كانت عادات وتقاليد القرية تعتبر ذلك مُخزيًا ومُشينًا. في كثير من الحالات، لم يرغب أحدٌ في طلب الزواج منهن، إذا عبّرن عن مشاعرهن.

على النقيض، الرجال كانوا أكثر حظًا من النساء في هذا الأمر، إلا أنهم كانوا قادرين على إظهار اهتمامهم بالنساء اللواتي يُعجبن بهم؛ لكن بالسر ولا يستطيعون البوح به أمام الأغراب.

لأن هذا كان يُسيء بالفعل إلى سمعة النساء اللواتي يُعجبن بهن.

لذلك كان ينتهي الأمر دائمًا بالرجل، إلى الزواج من أول فتاة يُعجب بها.

أما الآن، قد تغيرت أشياء كثيرة في الثقافة الريفية بصفة عامة وبالطبع ثقافة قريتي؛ بما في ذلك الحق في التعبير عن المشاعر.

يبدو جليًا أن الجيل الحالي و الأصغر منا سنًا، يعد أقوى وأكثر تمردًا منا.

حاليًا، يتمتع الفتيان والفتيات في ثقافتي بحقوق متساوية في التعبير عن مشاعرهم وإبداء اهتمامهم بالجنس الآخر.

رغم ذلك، تسبب هذا التغيير في صراع عميق بينهم وبين أبناء جيلي.

لكن بالنهاية، أصبحت فتيات اليوم أكثر انفتاحًا وتعبيرًا عن أنفسهن، وأكثر قدرة على إظهار إعجابهن بمن يحبون.

لم يُسمح بذلك للفتيات من جيلي؛ ومازلن يتساءلن: ما معنى كلمة كراش؟! مثلي تمامًا!!
